Title: Ethics –“Get A Clue”

Ethics for Court Reporters: 2.5 hours

Presenter: Pam Coder, CSR

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

Discussion amongst attendees on what’s happening in the world of reporting. What issues are happening in their area, how are they handling the issues? What can we do as reporters to improve communications between reporters and their firms, clients, attorneys, judges, etc.
Open discussion about all things reporting.

Special format: Game: Clue for today’s reporter

Specific workshop topics:

  • Group discussion on handling ethical dilemmas that happen to us on a daily basis to protect your license and your integrity
  • HIPAA, the reporter, and the reporter’s “workforce”
  • Learn new ways to handle situations effectively from your peers
  • Clues for today’s reporter is a game of whodunit by competing with your peers in answering ethical dilemmas in a timely manner for points to figure out who best knows the rules. This is a networking exercise as well as an ethics first exercise. Let’s see who wins all the clues to figure out “whodunit”

Session 2

Title: “Peak Performance & Writing Shortcuts & Super Briefs”

How To Do Your Best Under Pressure And Tips On Writing Shortcuts and Super Briefs: 4 hours

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

To teach you how to master your energy, emotions, and thoughts during high-pressure situations, such as a contentious hearing or trial, certification testing, applying for a position with an agency or court, an uncomfortable confrontation or challenge with an attorney or judge, agency owner, etc.

For the second part, Writing Shortcuts & Super Briefs

Learning Objectives:

Mastering instant recall for clarifying, conflicts, applying prefixes and suffixes for word- building, creating easy briefs on the fly, and learning techniques to master easier ways to write long words, and ideas to serve captioners and CART providers.

Specific Topics:

  • Conflict clarification
  • Writing clarification for prefixes and suffixes
  • Shortcuts for most frequently used alphabets
  • Ideas for writing numbers easier, including single strokes for years
  • Techniques to create briefs on the fly

Learning Outcomes:

Court reporters will learn easy techniques to clarify conflicts, distinctive ways to write prefixes and suffixes (such as re- and -ry and final –er and –or ), strategies to create most common alphabets, numbers, and “Smart Strokes.” This leads to more confidence in doing realtime for others.

Title: Easy Solutions for Difficult Situations

How Grammar and Punctuation Make You Better At Proofing: 2 hours

Title: “Stress Stoppers”

Stress Management Tips For Court Reporters: 1.5 hours

Content Outline:

This session will facilitate group discussions on what causes the participant's stress both at work and home and as a group will discover ways to deal with that stress.

I. The participants will discuss:

  • The causes of mental and physical stress brought on from Court Reporting
  • The effects of stress on their work
  • Possible solutions

II. The participants will learn how to:

  • Reduce stress
  • Break tension
  • Reframe negative situations
  • Deal with the negative side of life to which they are constantly exposed
  • Take themselves lightly and their work seriously
