SESSION TITLE: WWYD: Pro Se/Indigent/Sovereign Citizen and the Record.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:
Reporters will learn how to deal with litigants who are pro se/indigent/sovereign citizens
regarding requests for records.
• The law regarding indigent records
• scenarios
• how to address questions from these litigants regarding the record
• our demeanor in dealing with these type of litigants particularly sovereign citizens
• FARETTA QUESTIONS
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Court Reporters will have tools to use in the event they are asked to produce records for
pro se/indigent/sovereign citizens.
SESSION 2:
Session Title: ETHICAL HAPPENINGS
2.5 Hours (150 minutes) 10:15am-12:45pm
PRESENTER: PAM GWIN SHEPPARD AND KEVIN BOWDEN
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
This session will involve current happenings in the court reporting industry as reported
by many different outlets.
SPECIFIC TOPICS:
• new rules/laws
• current happenings across the US with digitals/AI/ASR
• voice writers and the record versus digital
• “reporters” practicing without a license in licensure states
• what’s happening in your state
• NCRA ethical guidelines
• Audio recordings
• Zoom recordings
• Third-party requests
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Court Reporters will learn the current and future ethical happenings that are
impacting the future of our profession.
SESSION 3:
Session Title: COURTROOM and DEPO SAFETY: "Warning signs of possible
danger!"
1 HR (60 Mins) 1:15-2:15pm
PRESENTER: Kathy McDaniel, CSR and Pam Gwin Sheppard, CSR
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
This PowerPoint and video presentation will equip court reporters with information on
what to do in the event of dangerous situations in the courthouse, outside the
courthouse, and in depositions.
SPECIFIC TOPICS:
• Body language - What to look for.
• Recent situations in both depositions and courtrooms across the country.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Court Reporters will be able to identify facial expressions,
body language, and shifts in breathing patterns of possible attackers and, learn what to
do in scary situations.
SESSION 4:
TAKING THE UNKNOWN OUT OF REMOTE DEPOSITION
1 HR (60 mins) 2:15-3:15pm
PRESENTER: Kevin Bowden
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
This hour-long presentation will focus on opportunities to minimize unknown factors
that can derail remote depositions. We will also discuss what to expect, how to take
control and manage a remote deposition, notice requirements, rules governing, platform
demonstrations, and troubleshooting witness connections. Finally, we will discuss what
to expect when providing remote coverage for rural courts and specialty courts.
SPECIFIC TOPICS:
- Key benefits for attorneys conducting remote depositions
- Benefits for reporters conducting remote depositions
- Details on how to find and produce audio transcription
- How to connect and control remote depositions
- How to troubleshoot witness connections
- Tackling remote court connections
- How to effectively manage workflow
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Court reporters will understand what to expect when covering remote depositions and
remote court coverage, as well as details on specific rules which apply, and how to
manage effectively.
SESSION 5:
ERGONOMICS: Why sitting for extended periods can have serious consequences. 2-Hour (120 Mins) 3:30-5:30:pm
PRESENTER: KATHY McDANIEL, CSR
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
This two-hour presentation will focus on what happens to the hips, butt, and back after
prolonged sitting and how to prevent damage to the spine. This session will include
information provided by published studies from The American College of Sports
Medicine; and TEDx video by Health and Fitness expert and ACE personal trainer and
coach, Nicole Simonin.
SPECIFIC TOPICS:
• The benefits of chiropractic care
• The benefits of massages
• Proper posture - Preventing Dowager Hump
• The Power of Ergonomic Pressure Relief Chairs: Do court reporters REALLY
"need" these chairs?
• Coccyx/Sciatica Pain Relief seats
• Back supporting undergarments
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Court Reporters will receive beneficial information regarding the support of the spine,
hips, and back with regards to keeping their body aligned as we sit for long periods of
time and days at a time with very little breaks. Further, reporters will learn the benefits
of ergonomics.
SESSION 6:
Session Title: SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND ITS EFFECTS ON COWORKERS, FRIENDS AND FAMILY
1 HR (60 MINS) 5:30-6:30pm
PRESENTERS: PAM GWIN SHEPPARD, CSR AND KATHY MCDANIEL, CSR
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
This hour-long presentation will focus on the effects of sexual harassment in the
workplace and its effects on the people around the victim. By using a PowerPoint
presentation and videos, we will also discuss how family, friends, and coworkers can
support the victim.
SPECIFIC TOPICS:
- Identifying characteristics of sexual harassment
- Speak up: see something, say something
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Court Reporters will understand how to support their fellow colleagues and
others when presented with the circumstances of sexual harassment.
SESSION 7:
Session Title: ENGLISH UPDATES
1.5 HRS (90 MINS) 6:30-8pm
PRESENTERS: PAM GWIN SHEPPARD, CSR, JEFF JUSTICE
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
This 90-minute presentation will focus on helping the reporter navigate through
challenging English worksheets to aid in formulating better transcripts for their clients.
SPECIFIC TOPICS:
• new words added to the Webster’s Dictionary;
• one word, two words, hyphenated;
• words that look alike and sound alike but have different meanings;
• a recitation of opening and closing statements with written paperwork to
punctuate with grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization;
• Wheel of Fortune puzzle game.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Court Reporters will refresh themselves on the above topics to aid in faster and
cleaner editing of their records.
